Texas Tip: Before You Ride, Purchase the Right Helmet

Now that summer is officially underway, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that motorcycle enthusiasts have hit the streets in full force. Whether you’re a veteran rider or just purchased your first bike, safety should always be your number one priority. Are you protecting yourself the best you can?

The most important piece of protective equipment you can own is a full face helmet. Not only will the shield protect you from debris as you ride, the full coverage offers you the most protection available in the event of a crash.  All helmets will fit you differently, so finding one that fits correctly is a must.  If you are planning to use a helmet someone passed on to you or one that comes with the bike, you may not be getting the best protection available.

A helmet that fits properly will follow these guidelines:

  • Your helmet should not be able to twist or lift off your head due to wind when you ride.
  • Your helmet should be so tight it leaves a red mark on your forehead and the ear holes must be away from your ears and not pressing or folding your ears in any way.
  • If you are breaking in a new helmet, the liner should be pressed firmly against your cheeks but not uncomfortable.
  • There should be a very snug fit between your cheeks and the helmet liner. Once you begin to wear your helmet it will begin to form to your face but remain snugly pressed against your cheeks.

If you find your helmet meets all of the above criteria in fitting your face but you are having issues with the manner that the helmet fits your forehead or ears, here are a few tricks you can use to improve the fit:

Use the back of a spoon on your forehead pad to form the foam liner to alleviate any spots where the liner leaves a mark on your forehead. If you are experiencing discomfort and contact on your ears, you can pull the liner away and trim part of the Styrofoam with a knife to clear your ears.

When your helmet fits properly, you will able to take longer trips, be more comfortable and ride safely. A helmet that fits properly and feels comfortable paired with a superior Texas motorcycle insurance policy is a combination that will help to keep you and your bike safe in the event of an accident!

Texas Texting While Driving Ban: What It Means For You

As Americans, there are two things we all universally love: driving and staying in touch. Since cell phones have increased in popularity over the last decade, the use of mobile phones while driving has also increased. Unfortunately, car accidents caused by cell phone usage are also rising at an alarming rate, with 28% of all accidents being caused while using a mobile phone.

The Texas Senate recently approved a measure that would ban texting, sending emails and instant messages while driving. According to state Sen. Judith Zaffirini, “texting while driving is 23 times more dangerous than non-distracted driving and 17 times more dangerous than talking on the phone while driving“.

So what does this mean for Texas drivers?

Texas drivers are not only responsible for their own safety, but also for the well-being of other drivers and pedestrians. As a result of the new law, Texas drivers will now be held accountable if they are involved in an accident while texting.

How can you properly protect yourself? To begin, drivers should make it a top priority to ensure that they have the most effective vehicle coverage, before heading out onto the road.  As a licensed driver, it’s important for you to understand the different coverages available through your Texas auto insurance policy:

  • Liability: insurance for property damage and injuries to others caused by you while operating your vehicle
  • Medical: overage for the driver and occupants of the insured vehicle.
  • Collision: insures the owner from loss during a collision with another vehicle.
  • Comprehensive: protection from damage caused by things other than vehicle collision.

Having the correct – and necessary - insurance is the first step drivers can take to help safeguard themselves, their vehicles and others with whom they share the road.

With new driving laws frequently being passed, it’s important that you have the right coverage to protect yourself from any consequences. Dagley Insurance & Financial Services, Inc. understands the risks involved with driving and want to ensure that no Texas driver is left behind!

Umbrella Liability Insurance 101 – What is it, do I need it?

Unfortunately, in today’s society, lawsuits seem to be lurking everywhere. If an unexpected accident was to happen, and you were found at fault, are you confident in your liability protection?

Oftentimes, homeowners, auto and watercraft have a limit on the liability insurance that is included within the respective policy—but what if you are looking for that extra degree of security?

Umbrella liability insurance is designed specifically, to help put the minds of policy holders at ease. An umbrella policy provides the added liability protection, not found in your standard homeowners, auto or watercraft personal insurance policies.

Most liability coverages, which reside within your current insurance policies, only cover bodily injury and property damage to others. Umbrella policies will extend those coverage limits to not only provide additional coverage for bodily injury and property damage, but also cover other aspects such medical expenses, rehabilitative therapy or lost waged dues to the negligence of those found at fault.

Your typical umbrella liability insurance will cover:

  • Claims of bodily injuries or property damage caused by you, or members of your family, as well as hazards on your property, for which you are found responsible for
  • Personal liability coverage for incidents or accidents that occur on or off of your property
  • Enhanced protection above your standard auto policy, for auto-related liabilities
  • Protection against non-business related personal injury claims such as slander libel, wrongful eviction and false arrest
  • Legal defense costs for covered loss, including lawyers’ fees and associated court costs

It’s important to keep in mind that each personal insurance policy is different. What may be considered a covered liability under one policy may not be covered under another. Your umbrella insurance policy would kick in, when a situation such as this presents itself—and furthermore is there to protect you when you exceed the amount of liability coverage allotted to you for a particular event or accident, in which you are found at fault.

Have questions about your umbrella insurance needs? Interested in further clarification about the product and its many coverage benefits? Contact Dagley Insurance and Financial Services, we’d be happy to help you gain the coverage you deserve!
