ATTENTION TEEN DRIVERS: 7 Tips for Safe Driving!

It’s no secret that teenagers get a bad wrap when it comes to driving. With all the newest technologies and distractions, it’s easier than ever for a young driver to make a simple mistake that ends in a life changing event or worse, life ending. As a parent, it is your job to set a good example and work with your child on learning the rules of the road. As a teenager, it is your job to take in the advice from experiences drivers and show that you can handle driving. It is not a time to multitask, but a time to get from one place to another without any accidents in between. Here are a few things to remember when you go to take a spin.

#1: Avoid driving distractions. Turn off your phone, put it on silent, or put it in your glove compartment. Do anything that will keep you from reaching for it. Unless it is an emergency, your phone should not be a priority! In the event of an emergency, pull over at a safe spot and make the call. The same goes for texting.

#2: Seatbelts NEVER go out of style. Wear it and wear it proud! They are there for a reason. Make sure you and your passengers take full advantage of them, at all times. In the event of an accident, a seatbelt will prevent you from flying headfirst through windshield.

#3: Avoid the need for speed. Speeding increases your chances of a collision, as well as the impact of a collision AND gets you a ticket. These are all just losing situations. Relax…you will get where you need to be.

#4: Check all mirrors, double check your blind spots. Mirrors can often be neglected but they are an important part of your commute! Make sure to check them all, and blind spots especially when merging into a lane.

#5: No driving under the influence. It goes without saying that drinking and driving is not tolerated. Besides putting yourself at high risk of an accident, it will also ruin your driving record and reputation. Call a reliable friend or family member if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

#6: Fill it up. Don’t make the mistake of waiting to fill up last minute. It’s best to stay above E for your car and for you. Who knows where you could fall short of gas.

#7: Keep up with maintenance. Keeping up with your oil changes and maintenance work will ensure you a smooth ride.

Remember these safety tips when you get behind the wheel. At Dagley Insurance & Financial Services, we want our youth to break the mold and prove the stereotypes wrong. Teenagers CAN be good drivers if they put their minds to it. In case of a fender bender, be sure to look into a TX auto quote to find the perfect policy for you.

Katy Texas Cheer for Charity Showcase Raises $3,000

Earlier this week, high school cheerleaders, coaches and mascots joined together for the first-ever Katy ISD Cheer for Charity Showcase.

The event allowed for squads to join forces in an attempt to raise money for the Texas Children’s Hospital  West Campus – and they proves quite successful, raising just over $3,000 for playrooms at the facility.

Approximately 650 patrons attended the Katy TX event, which featured varsity and junior varsity cheerleading squads, representing each of the Katy ISD high schools. Each of the high school’s mascots also joined in on the fun, taking part in a combined performance.

“It was good to see the cheerleaders and mascots from all schools congratulating each other on their performances at the end of the evening,” Bob Bryant, Katy ISD Director of Fine Arts, told the Katy Times. “This is another example that shows that, though we have many schools here, Katy ISD is one community working together.”

During the planning and organization of the fundraising event, cheerleading coaches from all campuses created a list of popular charity choices, submitted by their squads, and voted on who would be the final recipient—the resulting choice being the Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus.

“I think it was perfect timing with the opening of the west campus,” stated Amy McConnell, psychology teacher and cheerleading coach at Taylor High School. “Plus, it’s great to see students doing something for the youth in this community.”

According to the Katy Times, a check presentation to Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus is scheduled for Monday, April 11.

Local Katy High School Student Appears on CNN’s Morning Express

At Dagley Insurance & Financial Services we love to support our local Katy, Texas community—and what better way to share the love than to highlight this story:

On Tuesday, February 1st, Katy High School’s KTTV student news anchor, Ashley Childs, had the incredible opportunity to appear on CNN’s Headline News (HLN) Morning Express with Robin Meade.

Childs, who currently is a senior at Katy High, was selected to appear on the show as a result of an essay she had written for the Backpack Journalist project; which is described as “an educational support community that aims at helping military youth find their voice through writing”. Childs was invited to attend a two-day writing and broadcast workshop in Atlanta, as well as make her public appearance on HLN.

The high school writer’s moving tribute honored her mother, Lt. Laura Childs of the Army National Guard. Childs now joins the ranks of celebrities like Kim Kardashian and singer Angie Stone whom have participated in CNN’s “Salute the Troops” initiative.

All of us at Dagley Insurance want to congratulate our fellow Katy, TX native, Ashley Childs for her remarkable accomplishment and major television appearance! To view her moment of fame, check out the great video below—

A recent post from The Katy Times described further details about the Adopt a Hero for Christmas initiative, and urged community members to volunteer their time to deliver gifts this weekend.

This wonderful community effort enables Texans to honor local wounded soldiers, and their families, during the holiday season. The annual ride allows for volunteers to visit with these neighborhood heroes and remind them, that especially during this festive season, they are not forgotten—and their dedication to our country is greatly appreciated.

Adopt a Hero; 2009 Visit

Registration for the event will be held at la Madeleine located at 23322 Mercantile Parkway, near Grand Parkway, on the northern side of Interstate 10. Registration will begin promptly at 6:45 a.m. and volunteers will gather for a meeting at 7:15 a.m.

Adopt a Hero for Christmas is a nonprofit charity whose mission is to stand by America’s wounded soldiers and provide both them and their families with a meaningful Christmas experience.

Katy, TX Bond Referendum Resources – November 2 Matters!

It’s not often Katy, Texas sees a $459,791,092 bond authorization package on the table. For this reason, we strongly encourage fellow Katy residents to learn what goes into a bond, why it’s important and vote accordingly so we can make the best poss

ible decisions for our community.

Fortunately, the town of Katy has built a website spelling out the intricate details of the bond package including descriptions and background on each project. The basic overview of the bond authorization package is described below:

The bond package is comprised of several projects and includes funding for items such as the construction of three elementary, one junior high and one high school; comprehensive renovations at five of the district’s oldest campuses including Katy, Taylor, and Mayde Creek High Schools, as well as West Memorial and Mayde Creek Junior High Schools; and more than 50 component replacement projects at several campuses.

To best serve the residents of Katy and surrounding town, there is also a Katy bond referendum question submittal site where inquiries about the proposed new schools, renovations, technology, finances, transportation and other issues can be submitted.

Of course, the hardest part for residents to swallow will be the tax increase. A formula used to project that potential tax increase predicts that taxes will go from the $.40 rate now to $.44 in September of 2012, with every $.01 increase equaling $10 per year increase for every $100,000 of taxable income.

November 2 will be an important day for residents of Katy as we vote to decide how our city will shaped in the next decade. We look forward to monitoring more of the debate.
