Texas AAA Supports National Teen Driver Safety Week

Yesterday marked the beginning of National Teen Driver Safety Week put on by AAA. Local news station KVUE interviewed Linda Von Quintus of Texas AAA this morning to find out how the state is making families aware.

About 91% of teenagers admit to driving distracted according to a recent study by AAA and Seventeen Magazine. Many of which were willing to admit they knew it was dangerous but still continued to drive while distracted.

Governor Rick Perry of Texas signed a declaration encouraging parents to talk with their teens and make them aware of the rules of the road along with establishing household rules for their younger drivers. The three main issues AAA wants to get across by issuing the week of safety is texting while driving, speeding, and driving under the influence, all dangerous driving practices that cause many accidents each year.

“Like the Governor, we at AAA Texas know that proactive parents can make a difference in educating teen drivers about road safety,” said Quintus.

Make sure you talk to your teens this week about safety on the road. Check out the new Texas AAA safety website, the parent-teen driving agreement along with making sure an updated copy of their TX Car Insurance is located in the glove box at all times.

TDI Bulletin Highlights Consumer Rights when Filing Auto Insurance Claims

In its ongoing effort to promote a healthy and honest Texas auto insurance environment for consumers, the Texas Department of Insurance recently issued a bulletin to insurance companies reminding them of their responsibilities to claimants in the realms of payment for damage and selection of an auto body repair shop.

The Commissioner’s Bulletin references Section 1952.301 of the Texas Insurance Code (TIC) which states that, after a claim is made, insurers can’t limit coverage by:

  1. Specifying the brand, type, kind, age, vendor, supplier, or condition of parts or products that may be used to repair the vehicle; or
  1. Limiting the beneficiary of the policy from selecting a repair person or facility to repair damage to the vehicle.

Put bluntly, insurance providers CAN’T tell you what parts to use when fixing a damaged auto, nor can they tell you where to get it fixed. If they do, they are in breach of the TIC and should be reported to the Texas Department of Insurance.

The bulletin goes on to spell out some of the other responsibilities insurers have to their customers reiterating that a “fair and equitable” settlement of claims based on good faith should always applied.

“Unlike the big box and online discount insurance providers, Dagley Insurance and Financial Services in Katy, Texas provides personal service to all of our clients,” says Nathan Dagley, owner of Dagley Insurance. “We are not in the business of just selling a policy, we engage with our clients to understand specific needs before initiating the best coverage, a policy tailored to meet specific situations and requirements. As a result, we can effectively advocate for them in the unfortunate event of a loss. Our goal is to establish long-term relationships with our clients and the only way to do that is to make certain that they receive the best coverage and service. It’s the Dagley way.”

We encourage all customers to review their Texas Insurance policies, especially when a claim is made to ensure you’re not being left with shoddy aftermarket auto parts or unfair claims settlements. Of course, the safer bet is finding an insurance agent you can trust.

Rising Auto Sales Create a Demand for Texas Auto Insurance

People have started to buy again, well at least in the auto industry. Reports are in that sales rose about 6.6% for auto dealerships which is around 1 million more cars and trucks than were sold in June of 2010.  Sales were also 5.1% higher than one year ago in July 2009, where auto sales fell to a 30-year low.

The bump in sales is mostly credited to luxury cars and trucks. Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry trends and analysis at the car pricing website TrueCar.com, said growth in truck and luxury sales is a positive sign since buyers are most likely to hold off purchases in those segments when times are tough.

Besides luxury purchases, cars are being bought due to pure need. Older cars are breaking down, and some people just cannot wait any longer without upgrading their ride. With many summer promotions going on some people feel that it is the best time to buy. Sales are up for July but the road to recovery is still in the distance.

“The industry recovery continues to be very modest but also continues to be in the right direction,” said Bob Carter, a Toyota Motor Corp. group vice president.

The top three sales bumps were seen in Nissans which grew 28% from June, Volkswagen which is up 13.4% in a month, and Kia up 11%.

With many people out purchasing new cars there will be a bigger need for Texas auto insurance as well. With Ford and Toyota selling more trucks this month than they have in the past two and a half years drivers seem excited to get back on the road.
